Q: Why is GatorJUG participating with COMMON?
COMMON is the world's largest users group of IBM and IBM-compatible IT users, and their Fall 2003 Conference & Expo, September 7-11 in Orlando, will be the largest semi-annual gathering in the iSeries world.

Java will have a strong presence at this conference. To learn more about them, visit http://www.common.org/sessions.html and click on "Java." Here is what COMMON says about their Java courses: "Wrap your head around the
core concepts of OOP: objects, classes, inheritance, polymorphism, and encapsulation. Discover how to apply these OOP concepts, in concert with OO design strategies, to simplify the task of application analysis and design.
See the concrete benefits of OOP for yourself, as you read and write useful Java code. Come and learn what the Java revolution is all about!"

You should learn about attending the entire five-day conference and expo, then join us at the GatorJUG meeting on Wednesday. For more information, go to http://www.common.org/conference.html. Registration is $1,495. COMMON membership is required. Annual individual membership is $125. Student registration is $95.

Attend the COMMON Expo Sunday-Tuesday. You can see dozens of new solutions by attending the COMMON Expo from Sunday, September 7 to Tuesday, September 9. An Expo Only pass is $20. You will be able to pre-register for Expo.

Presentation Struts

This presentation will demonstrate the use of Struts, Tomcat, Ant, and Hibernate to build Web-based applications. Attendees will learn how Struts simplifies the work involved in building reliable, maintainable, secure, high-performance Web sites. The presentation will provide minimal background information and focus on the process of building Struts-based Web applications.

Speaker: David Morris, who is a software architect with over 20 years of experience building enterprise software systems. For the last 5 years he has been working with Java to build custom software solutions. Those server-based systems support mission-critical systems that span several industries. Those systems leverage open-source Java software like Struts, Tomcat, Ant, and Hibernate. In addition to writing software, David is an author and technical editor for Midrange Server who provide news, analysis, product information, programming tips, management advice, and information on industry trends.

THE POST MEETING WRAP-UP:

I have attached the presentation (404 kb .pdf) and your members can download the associated source at: www.iseries-toolkit.org. You can download the source from the downloads page or from CVS, which contains the most current version. The CVS module is span. You can use anonymous for the user and cvs.sourceforge.net with a path of /cvsroot/iseries-toolkit. The password would be blank and the type would be pserver (unless someone wants to upload some enhancements). The CVS setup is explained in detail on the CVS page at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=39365. I did make some improvements that are currently only found in the CVS version.
